HANDSHAKE 1 paved the way for emerging NZ jewellery artists by demonstrating how the HS project could be divided into 2 progressive, safe, and cumulative programmes. One aimed to be an effective entry programme with mentor and exhibition support for developing sustainable emerging artist practices, and the other aimed for development support for curated high-end exhibitions.

This framework enabled more experimentation, continuous development, feedback with support, and a constant flow of multiple exhibition opportunities.

Handshake 2 (HS2: 2014-15) became the first part of the two HS programmes.  This two-year entry project was designed to nurture and empower 12 NZ emerging jewellery artists through masterclasses, mentoring feedback, and impactful exhibitions. HS2 provided participants with the essential tools, knowledge, and opportunities to thrive as contemporary art practitioners. Several HS2 artists progressed to HS3, a one-year project with high-end exhibition opportunities, while others secured opportunities to showcase their work in curated national and international exhibitions, while others moved on.
